Are You Thirsty?

“God, You’re my God!  I can’t get enough of You!  I’ve worked up such hunger and thirst for God traveling across dry and weary deserts.” ~ Psalm 63

I am thirsty all the time.  If you ever see me around, you’ll usually see a water bottle or a soda cup from my favorite restaurant sitting in a pretty close proximity to me.  People have always told me that I needed to get my sugar tested because as much as I drank I was probably diabetic.  No thank you.  I’ll wait it out.  That’s just not something that I really want to know at this point.  I’ll find out when I need to know.

I learned something last summer that I thought was really interesting.  I’d always heard throughout my adult life that you needed to drink eight glasses of water a day.  I never heard the stipulations on it, though.  That’s the case if you’re average weight and height.  If you’re overweight, that’s not enough.  If you’re tiny, it’s too much.  The new rule that I learned this past summer was half your body weight in ounces.  For me, that’s a lot of water.  It feels like I’m drinking three gallons a day.  I’m not, but by the amount of time I spend in the bathroom in connection with the amount of water I’m drinking, it might as well be three gallons.

But I did figure out my problem with being thirsty all the time.  I just wasn’t getting enough water.  Even combining the water/tea/soda, I wasn’t even getting enough liquid.  Which if you’re going to try this, you can’t count tea, soda or coffee towards that intake.  That’s strictly water.  Half your body weight in ounces.  Makes me want to get this weight off that much quicker!

There’s times in my spiritual walk where it’s like the Psalmist says above: “I can’t get enough of you!  I’ve worked up such hunger and thirst for God traveling across dry and weary deserts.” Like with the water, sometimes it feels like I just can’t get enough of the Word, of Jesus living and moving in my life.  I crave a deeper relationship with God.  The only thing that will really quench that craving is to dig deep into the Word and to just talk with Him more and more.  The only thing that will quench my physical thirst is water.

After I learned the new “rule” about water I realized why I was thirsty all of the time.  I wasn’t getting enough to drink.  I try to remember this in those times where I feel distant from God, when I feel like I just can’t quite get there, when I’m craving Him, just take a drink.  Read Psalms.  Read the rest of Psalms 63.  It’s beautiful.

So here’s my question for you…Are you thirsty?  If you are, Love is here.
